An affordable monochrome laser printer, the ML-1740 from Samsung is designed for home and small business use and comes with some attractive features. With a 600 x 600 dpi print resolution, text is easy to read, while a 17 ppm print speed delivers jobs quickly, when you need them.

A 250-page paper input tray is accompanied by a single-sheet manual bypass feeder and a 50-page output tray. The printer accepts plain paper, envelopes, labels, and transparency media, as well as media weights ranging from 16 to 24 lbs bond via the tray and 16 to 43 lbs bond via the manual feeder. The starter toner cartridge has an average life of about 1,000 pages (3,000 pages for the replacement cartridge), while a toner-save mode can reduce toner consumption by up to 40%.

I love this little printer. I've had it for 7 months or so and haven't had any troubles what so ever. It is doing most of the printing that my Epson C86 was doing and it is doing it cheaper and with cleaner, sharper looking text. Toner isn't so expensive if you shop around, I just ordered my first replacement and still have toner in the cartridge that came with the printer. I'm sure there are better faster lasers out there but this thing was cheap and it does the job quite nicely.

I cannot imagine a less expensive printer for routine printing.

I have purchased two of these printers and printed a total of
47361 pages during the last 19 months. I have never had to
purchase a toner cartridge -- just toner refills on ebay.

When the cartridge fails at roughly 23000 pages --- just
purchase another printer. I think 20,000 pages is about the
limit for a laser printer engine.

Very few paper jams, simple driver install, parallel and USB.

The standard print cartridge will last for over 20,000 pages
if you purchase high quality toner on eBay. Just pry open
the small cap and pour in toner when the toner is low roughly
every 1500 pages. I always use the toner save setting on the
printer.

This unit is ideal for anyone -- save money when combined with
a scanner for copy purposes.

Faults: Occasional print errors where a job ends abruptly with
a sheet indicating a print error code. It happens roughly
every 1000 pages for me. You must be aware on long print jobs
and check for completion. You will have to restart the print
job so it pays to check before you move on.

This unit is idea for a teacher that needs to print student
handouts and grade sheets on a daily basis. I have considerable
computer experience and have never seen any printer that matches
the durability of a Samsung ML-1740 Laser Printer (I say this sadly --- but at least it is not Chinese and is made in a free
country - Korea).

I could not be happier with this product. I had bought a fairly expensive HP laser printer about a year before, and the thing collapsed about a week after it went out of warranty. On the phone, HP helpfully prepared my re-order for me, but I decided to hold off and see what else was available--and I'm glad I did! This Samsung cost literally a fraction of what I would have paid for another HP, and I do not see any drop-off in quality. The printer shoots out fast, clean copies. Yes, as some other users have pointed out, it's a little noisy when it's printing, and yes, it takes a few seconds for it to warm up. But I'm still happy with it. Not only do you get clear, hassle-free printouts, but the online controls are also much more straightforward than with the HP (which I always found needlessly complicated). The paper tray could not be easier to load, and it handles a half-ream at a time.

One drawback that I have not seen anyone mention: it is much harder to find compatible toners for this than for printers from the better-known manufacturers. So you're probably going to have to buy Samsung toner, and one replacement costs almost as much as the printer itself! But I have not found that the printer goes through toner especially rapidly, and the toner-save feature really does seem to save toner (whereas, notoriously, the toner-save feature does not save any toner at all with some other printers).

I'm a very critical consumer, but this product is 5 stars solid.
